Slovak is a language close to the Polish language not only by the name of the national bard [Juliusz Słowacki, Polish poet and playwright]. Polish and Slovak belong to the group of West Slavic languages and have a fairly similar grammar (although Czech is even closer to us).

The Slovak language is divided into three strongly differentiated dialects: West Slavic, Central Slavic, East Slavic (closest to Polish). The literary, official variety of the language did not take shape until the 19th century.

One of the easiest differences between Polish and Slovak to spot is the so-called length of sound, i.e. the long or short pronunciation of vowels (e.g. a/å). In Polish, such long and short sounds disappeared around the 16th century. Fortunately, a good Polish-Slovak translator is well aware of these differences and will easily apply them to their work.

Much stronger than in the case of Polish is the link between Slovak and Czech. Speakers of these languages understand each other, and their distinctiveness is due more to historical than linguistic issues. In Slovak, these include, for example, the words “czerstwy” (pol. fresh)(Eng. stale), “diván” (pol. couch)(Eng. carpet), “nápad” (pol. idea)(Eng. robbery), “žito” (pol. wheat)(Eng. rye). These are language pitfalls not only for the interpreters, but also for standard tourists seeing that only ‘stale’ bread can be bought in any bakery.
