It records the Armenian language. It was established around 406. It is largely modelled on Greek script, and also partly on pahlovi (the writing system used to record Middle Persian, which in turn derives from Aramaic script).

It has 39 letters, but its first form had 36. Between the 10th and 12th centuries, ‘օ’, ‘ֆ’ and ‘և’ were added. The notation from left to right applies. Mesrop Mashtoc, an Armenian cleric and scholar, is credited as the creator. Interestingly, this man is referred to here as the ‘first teacher of the Armenian language’.

Armenians call their country ‘Hajstan’ and refer to themselves as ‘Hajer’. A popular theory is that it is named after Haika (Hajk nahapet, King Hajk, diucazun Hajk). And who was this man?
